Ephesians

Lesson 7: A New Way of ThinkingEphesians 4:17-32

In this study, Paul contrasts the old self with the new self, something that each of us struggles with as we live and work out our salvation experience. It is an important lesson because, once again, Paul shows us the differences between how the world thinks and acts, and how we are to think and act.

Bible

All of us struggle at times with how we should act in given situations. Quite often, we try to copy the behavior or thinking of those around us whom we respect. Paul, however, wants us to see that there is another way of living, as the new creation in Christ that we are.

Read Ephesians 4:17-32 and answer the following:

  1. Read Psalm 1 and list the things that a righteous man does. Now read Ephesians 4:17-32 and note the similarities.
  2. In Ephesians 4:17-19, Paul lists some details about how the world thinks. What are some of the things that he cites?
  3. In verses 20-24 what are the differences between the old self and new self (or some translations may say old man and new man)?
  4. In verse 23, Paul states that we are to be transformed. Now read Romans 12:2 and describe what causes this transformation?
  5. What are we to do with what we learn? (Ephesians 4:25-28)
  6. Paul concludes this section by giving us some specific instructions on what we are NOT to do. List some of the specific things that he cites.

My prayer this week is that as you study this lesson, you will come to see and understand more of the new self that Christ makes possible. And I pray that through this transformation, you will begin to think and act NOT as the world would, but as the Holy Spirit leads you, so that in everything you will glorify Him.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." (Proverbs 3:5)

I pray God’s blessings on you this week as you study His Holy Word.

Yours in Christ,

Wes
