Missions: 10 Weeks
Week 8 w/answersPrecept Ministries
Welcome to our eighth week of studying about missions and focusing on the mission-related work currently on-going in our neighborhood and around the world. This week we’ll look at an organization called "Precept Ministries".
I was blessed in our church by having Gladys Kuhlmann introduce us to Precept Ministries. She was involved in Precept for many years, and I am excited that she shared her experiences and love for this ministry with us.

Precept Ministries’ mission is "to engage people in relationship with God through knowing His Word." Their vision for accomplishing this is to reach "everybody, everywhere, any time, any place, any language, and any age with one message: the Bible, and one method: inductive study."
Their website is located at http://www.precept.org.
Based on your findings at the Precept web site, answer the following:
- How long has Precept Ministries been around, and how did it get started?
- ANSWER 1: Precept Ministries was founded in 1970 by Kay and Jack Arthur.
- ANSWER 2: Kay Arthur started a Bible study for teenagers in their living room, which eventually grew into the "Reach Out Ranch" (a converted chicken farm purchased by Jack and Kay Arthur in 1970). Kay next started a women's Bible study class, which was expanded to include men (by popular demand), which then grew to a class of over 1800 people in Atlanta, GA.
- ANSWER 3: In order to make this ministry scalable, Kay then began writing "Precept Upon Precept" courses, and Jack left his broadcasting career at a local Christian radio station to devote his energy full-time to the growing Ministry as its president.
- Where is Precept Ministries headquartered?
- ANSWER: Chattanooga, TN.
- What is "inductive Bible study", and what are the three steps associated with it?
- ANSWER 1: Observation - The concept behind the inductive study method is to get students personally, intimately involved with the subject, observing carefully for themselves. Specially designed skills for busy lives in an age of speed, noise and endless distractions, the inductive study method will help you slow down to focus on God's Word, and see what it really says.
- ANSWER 2: Interpretation - Careful observation enables students to discover what the text means in its context. Since the Bible is its own best interpreter, the more accurate your observation, the greater will be your understanding of God's Word.
- ANSWER 3: Application - The Creator and Author of life has shown us how to live a satisfying, eternally significant life. Intentional, disciplined observation and interpretation lead you to the profoundly applicable Truth of the Bible. Without application Bible study can become "knowledge that puffs up", manifesting itself in doctrinally shallow anecdotes.
- What is the preferred Bible translation used by Kay Arthur in Precept studies?
- ANSWER: The NASB - New American Standard Bible translation.
- What are five different ways that you can get involved in Precept Ministries?
- ANSWER 1: Purchase books, workbooks, audio and video resources.
- ANSWER 2: Participate online in a "Precepts for Life" study with Kay Arthur.
- ANSWER 3: Attend Men's and Women's Conferences, National Conventions, and Youth Events.
- ANSWER 4: Sign up for a Bible Study Training Workshop, which will equip you to lead any Precept Bible study.
- ANSWER 5: Support Precept Ministries financially.
- What two online media resources available for participating in a Precept Bible study?
- ANSWER 1: Download tools and training for stugy using the Precepts methodology at https://www.precept.org/study/.
- ANSWER 2: Watch streaming video broadcasts online at PreceptsForLife.com
- Bonus Questions:
- How did Kay and Jack Arthur meet?
- ANSWER: After years serving with the Pocket Testament League, Jack Arthur met a young widow who had two small boys, Mark and Tom, at Tennessee Temple in Chattanooga.
- How did they end up returning to Chattanooga, TN?
- ANSWER: After marrying, they went on the mission field together to Mexico, where they had another son, David. Illness forced them to pack up and head home, but their disappointment was really God’s appointment for them in their important ministry back in Chattanooga, TN where Jack became the Station Manager for a Christian radio station that brought Bible teaching to the airwaves in the Southeast, and Kay started a Bible study for teenagers in their living room.
- How did Kay and Jack Arthur meet?
As I mentioned above, in my former home church, Southview, we were fortunate enough to have Gladys Kuhlmann as a leader for Precept studies, typically teaching her classes twice a week: once during the day, and once during the evening. This accommodating class schedule enabled many people to study God’s Word together who would normally not be able to do so.
It is exciting to see a ministry like this which teaches and encourages people to study and interpret the Bible, using the inductive approach—which, in turn, enables and empowers the Bible seeker to read and, with the help of the Holy Spirit, understand what God’s Word is saying to us today!
In Christ,
Wes
